Conal MacPhee vs Adrian Diaconu
Fight results:

by: Robert Caird
Conal MacPhee came out swinging hard and threw some fantastic combinations in his fight for the Canadian Light Heavyweight title, but Romanian Adrian Diaconu's raw power was at it's best in round one and round two.
In the opening rounds Conal went toe to toe with Diaconu and was hit hard by Diaconu taking 8-counts in both round one and round two. Conal's pre-fight training had built his conditioning perfectly to maintain12 rounds of intense boxing, and the plan was to fight with the same intensity that wore down Willard Lewis giving Conal the victory in April.
In round three and round four Conal began to pull away and outboxed Daiconu, as Conal's body punches were taking their toll. By the end of the fourth round Diaconu went to his corner with a nasty cut over one eye and MacPhee to his corner with a badly cut lip. Conal's cornerman Ken Lacusta worked hard to stop Conal's bleeding , but couldn't reduce the flow and chose to side with the ringside physician and stop the fight.
From all accounts Conal fought with the heart of a true warrior, and has most definately secured a re-match with Diaconu for another crack at the title sometime in the near future.
Everyone at basx training centre wishes to congratulate Conal for putting on such a fantastic fight.

Adrian Diaconu mange to put Conal MacPhee down twice in the first two rounds before stopping him with a TKO victory at 3:00 minutes of the fifth round, winning the Canadian light-heavyweight championship. Ringside physician Dr Meunier determined that the bleeding to the mouth of MacPhee was too excessive to allow the fight to go on. While his corner were in agreement with the stoppage, MacPhee who had been coming on a little and outboxing the hard-hitting Romanian was devastated afterwards. MacPhee though simply suffered too much punishment in the early going, falling twice to The Shark's big left hand, and when it came time to box, was still eating the majority of the leather being thrown. Diaconu moves to 18-0 with the victory, while MacPhee falls to 10-2-1.

Diaconu : I'll be ready!
written by Dave Spencer, FightNews Canada

2005-06-03

In one of the very few titles that are now vacant on the Canadian scene, Montreal Romanian Adrian Diaconu will be battling Conal MacPhee of Vancouver tonight as Interbox brings boxing back to the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal. Diaconu, perfect at 17-0, is coming of the first round dismantling of James Crawfowd in his native Romania. "This is my first title ever as a pro," Diaconu told Fightnews, "It's my first belt, and I'll be ready." MacPhee is coming off a victory over former Canadian champion Willard Lewis and sports an 11-1 record.

Diaconu showed that he is a force to be reckoned with, not just in Canada, but also on the world stage with his win over Crawford, a veteran who took Eric Lucas a full twelve the time previous. "I don't think this one was better than any of the others," said Diaconu, "Every fight that I win there is a satisfaction for me." Those fights are coming more and more often as this is Diaconu's third fight in less than three months after a layoff of more than a year, forced mainly by financial restructuring of his promoter Interbox. While Leonard Dorin left his belt on the scales in his infamous non-event with Miguel Callist, Diaconu was left at the altar with no fight as the card went down in flames. "That was the last time I weighed 175, it's a weight I haven't fought at in a while, even before I took a break I was fighting heavier than that. But this is the weight class that is probably best for me; this is my job and I just have to go out and do it. If I was afraid of the making the weight, I shouldn't be in the sport.

"The Canadian title is a great opportunity for me, it will get me a step ahead. It's my job to be ready, I just take things fight by fight."

Diaconu meets MacPhee as part of the Lucian Bute- Jose Spearman card. Tickets are still available and the event will be shown across Quebec at Cage aux Sports restaurants.

Conal McPhee (L) and Willard Lewis exchange at close quarters.
Conditioning was the key to victory for Conal McPhee, 176, Edmonton, as his constant pressure eventually wore down former Canadian cruiserweight champion Willard Lewis, 175, Lac La Biche, Alberta. Lewis was able to counter McPhee well in the first three rounds, but, with the gas tank on empty, McPhee left him in the dust in the last three rounds, cruising to a six-round split decision victory. With the win McPhee improves to 11-1, Lewis drops to 17-14-3. Official scores: 59-55 x2 McPhee 58-56 Lewis. CPBScene scored it 4 rounds to 2, McPhee.
